Flashcards

FLASHCARD: a card bearing words, numbers, or pictures that is briefly displayed (as by a teacher to a class) usually as a learning aid (Merriam-Webster Dictionary).

The use of flashcards to assist in memorization and learning has long been a helpful technique utilized by teachers and students, alike. Flashcards represent a great learning tool in practicing for the GED, since they can evoke a fun way of learning through a question and answer format. Commonly spelled as a single word, a "flashcard" contains the question printed on one side of the card and the answer printed on the other side of the card. Flashcards are available preprinted with simulated GED questions and answers from many of the educational companies that provide practice-testing materials. Flashcards are especially useful in a repetitive drill to aid in learning by memorization.

Typical GED Language Arts Reading flashcards could feature the following printed information:

Flashcard #1
One side of the card contains the words - "active verbs." On the other side of the card, the definition reads, "verb whose subject is the doer of the action the verb is indicating. (The batter HIT the ball)."

Flashcard #2
One side of the card contains the word - "adverb." On the other side of the card, the printed definition reads, "part of speech that helps describe a verb, an adjective, or another adverb by giving it a more exact meaning. (Walks SLOWLY; VERY pretty)."

Flashcard #3
One side of the card contains the words - "auxiliary verb." On the other side of the card, the printed definition reads, "verb that helps another word show voice or tense. (I WOULD HAVE forgotten. She HAD left)."

Typical GED Social Studies flashcards could hold the following printed information:

Flashcard #1
One side of the card contains the word - "property." The other side of the card features a brief definition that reads, "possessions that may be personal (movable), land or real estate, or securities (stocks and bonds)."

Flashcard #2
