The GED Mathematics Test measures an applicant's level of skill in mathematics related study. This exam draws from the typical mathematical problem solving skills a high school student should understand and comprehend in order to attain an adequate level of mathematic literacy. The test format uses a combination of multiple choice questions and questions for which the test taker must calculate and provide the answer. The test measures an applicant's ability to use basic math skills, apply critical thinking and analysis skills, solve mathematical problems and equations, and utilize reasoning skills in order to address various mathematical issues.

The content of the GED Mathematics exam is divided into four primary areas of mathematical study, including understanding common numerical operations, geometry, data analysis, statistics and probability, and algebra. Each area comprises between 20 to 30 percent of the total exam content.

Numerical Operations
In this section of the exam, an applicant is expected to demonstrate a working understanding of using numbers for mathematical problem solving. These skills include dealing with whole numbers, fractional numbers, decimals, percentages, and scientific notation.

Geometry Measurements
This area of the exam covers various facets of geometry, including common problem solving and mathematical measuring in terms of spatial relationships of perimeter area, surface area, length, volume, weight and mass. Other topics include understanding the basics of converting between the metric system and the imperial system of measurement.

Data Analysis, Statistics and Probability
This section of the exam covers an applicant's ability to analyze, interpret, and understand data statistics by presenting questions featuring charts, graphs, or tables. Applicants are expected to demonstrate their knowledge in evaluating the mean, median, and mode from a group of data along with determining predictions based upon experimental or theoretical probabilities.

Algebra Functions
Applicants will demonstrate their algebraic skill in working with equations and functions in solving problems for this section of the test. Algebraic analysis also typically includes the test taker's ability to convert between different representations such as tables, graphs, and equations.
