The Importance of the GED

Obtaining a high school education is important. Sure, dropping out is easy. If you drop out, you might gain some immediate freedom and work an odd job. However, what will your future look like without that high school education? To put it mildly, prospects for well paying employment are going to be pretty bleak. Without a high school education and either a diploma or a GED that shows your accomplishment, your opportunities for attending college, pursuing an interesting career with a decent salary, and all your future dreams could be on permanent hold.

The world is changing into a society built upon global awareness, in which an individual's level of knowledge is the key for their future success. No longer does a person compete for employment only with someone next door; instead, competition may be between any number of persons in the global community . A person without a minimum of a high school education can expect to live at the poverty standard in regard to their earned income. A recent 2008 study conducted by "Pennsylvania Partnerships for Children" stated that high school drop outs were more than twice as likely to live at or below poverty levels than persons completing a high school education.

The ability to attend college after dropping out of high school also is out of the question. At minimum, college enrollment standards require at least a high school diploma or a GED certificate. In order for any college even to consider a student's educational transcripts, the student must meet the preceding prerequisite items. In addition, colleges may look upon less measurable assets such as persistence in working toward a personal goal or commitment to learning. The ability to obtain a high school diploma or sit for the GED exam requires a focused attitude, commitment to work for achievement, and an understanding of one's future. The Importance of the GED
